Well, after two days of work tiling (and many more before that to build up the wall to make it straight), the wall looks good to the eye. I still need to wash off the grey streaks from the adhesive and grout the tile, but I'm very happy with how it turned out. The wall still isn't perfect, partly because the initial wall was crooked (hindsight I'd have knocked it down and started fresh) and my skills are far from professional, but it looks great with the gate from far away. Eventually the other side of the gate will get tile too.
