New Year's Eve Traffic Stop

I regularly go through traffic stops where police are set up to check licences and insurance. Most of the time I pull up, give a greeting in English and am waved through. If the officer in charge speaks English well, they'll usually ask me where I'm from. I always say Slim River (our town) and they never take it further (I know they're asking what country I'm from). They sometimes ask for my passport, which I offer my license, which is local, so that usually finishes the conversation.

Last night I stopped, said good evening, and the officer was like a deer in headlights... Then a guy behind him recognized me, said hi cikgu (teacher) and everyone said oh, cikgu, go go go. It's nice not to be harassed.
